"What you are looking at is live air traffic, not an animation. Nearly every airliner, and a growing share of smaller aircraft, continuously broadcasts its position, altitude, speed and heading over a signal called ADS-B. Receivers on the ground pick up those broadcasts and pass them to the map. We receive part of that traffic ourselves: our own ADS-B receiver station feeds this radar directly, alongside a worldwide network of community receivers, so the picture is built from first-hand reception rather than a licensed copy of someone else’s map. At any moment there are well over ten thousand aircraft in the air worldwide: airliners on the trunk routes, cargo jets overnight, business aviation, helicopters, and light aircraft out on a sunny day. The map draws the traffic in whatever part of the world you are looking at, from a single airfield to a whole continent."

You can browse: drag and zoom the flight tracker map to any airport, city or stretch of coastline and watch the traffic there, from the holding patterns over New York to the departure streams out of London and Frankfurt.
