"A celebrated slogan for many years in Ireland in an effort to bolster the economy, the Buy Irish campaign was backed by the governement of the late 1970s. Carrying the trademarke logo -'Guaranteed Irish', it was was eventually deemed to be illegal after a ruling by the European Court in 1983. Ireland's entry into the EEC in 1973 had obviosuly open the country to many new markets, but the response to promote native industries was high on the agenda of several governments at the time. While it did not become official policy until 1978 it was in vogue much earlier, as these advertisments from the Kerryman newspaper in December 1973 suggest. While the Buy Irish campaign was a great boost to the Irish economy, the idea was nothing new. Back in the 1930s the Irish Press newpspaper ran a prize fund offering readers a chance to win 'big' by purchasing Irish goods. Their 'Buy Irish' Week was a huge success and featured businesses and manufacturers from all over the country, as these advertisements from 1934 suggest: Yet the Irish Press were not the first to do this or promote Irish trade in this way. Jumping back another generation to the 1900s, the Irish Ireland movement led by Arthur Griffith and others had first espoused the benefits of prmoting Irish trade. What quickly followed was the first trademark (1906) - which read "Déanta i nÉirinn" (Made in Ireland). Very often the latter was published on advertisements including this 1923 newspaper advert advising the public that not only was the Lucania Bicycle made in Ireland, it was 'specially designed for Irish roads'. All of this goes to show that some ideas, at government level or otherwise, are not always new, just reinvented and repackaged.
