"Mark Rothko (1903–1970) built a body of work that changed repeatedly before reaching the large fields of colour for which he is most widely known. The painter born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, now Daugavpils, Latvia, immigrated to the United States as a child, trained and taught in New York, and spent decades testing how a painting could engage a viewer.[1] His art brings colour and form into a sustained encounter with the viewer, while his teaching, writings and ambitious commissions reveal the intellectual work behind the paintings. This guide follows the career through individual works, published research and the rooms created for his art."

"Early portraits, city scenes and subway paintings explore the relation between figures and New York architecture."

"Works such as Hierarchical Birds use mythic and organic imagery. Rothko and Gottlieb debated serious subject matter in their jointly signed 1943 statement."
