"Last time, I took a detour into the construction of the Molitor edition of Marx’s works, which the evidence says Foucault was reading in the 1950s when he took extensive notes on Marx. A question that came out of that is whether/how Marx distinguishes Entausserung (“alienation”) and Entfremdung (“estrangement”). It seems to me that he clearly does, at least some of the time when he’s talking about Hegel. In what follows, I want to confine my discussion to the end of the 1844 Manuscripts and the discussion of Hegel, and schematize what I take Marx’s argument on the subject to be."
"I take it that the section on alienated labor does an outstanding job getting at the concepts if not the terminology involved: objectification in labor becomes estranged when you have a lousy job and put your personality into a job and get minimum wage and a headache back. But that part wasn’t in the Landshut and Mayer edition of the Manuscripts, which meant it wasn’t in the Molitor edition Foucault was using, which is how I found myself needing to figure out the alienation/estrangement distinction in the part of the manuscripts that was included. Hence the Phenomenology."
"Foucault’s Question Anthropologique, a course on anthropology that he gave at Lille in 1954-5, contains a detailed reading of Marx. Foucault’s unpublished papers contain detailed notes on Marx from roughly the same period, as Jean-Baptiste Vuillerod indicates. The notes help with two textual points. First, Foucault was reading the edition of Marx’s Œuvres philosophiques translated by Jules Molitor. Unlike, for example, his reading of Heidegger, Foucault does not seem to have studied Marx in German (at least not at this stage). Second, Foucault takes The German Ideology to be decisive in Marx’s development, writing in his notes “Thèse: L’Idéologie allemande serait le premier texte matérialiste; les autres seraient encore philosophiques” (see the discussion in Vuillerod; a scan of the page is here). The most important text to understand for Foucault’s reading of Marx, then, is contained in Molitor’s Volume 6, which contains the German Ideology and the 1844 Manuscripts. Alas, the more I look at the Molitor volume, the stranger it becomes."
"Rebecca Crootof has a current paper on what she calls the “kill box” problem for autonomous weapon systems. It shows just how difficult it is to translate traditional just war values and laws into an AI context. Basically, one of the most important rules for warfare is that you try to distinguish enemy combatants from non-combatants, and only target the former. Of course any skim of the current news will show that this rule is frequently broken, but it seems reasonable to suppose that a world where militaries felt obliged to pay at least some attention to this rule is better than one where they do not."
