"Herbert Kastle is an author we’ve read before. His sprawling 1970 novel of American decadence Miami Golden Boy was a wild ride through political conspiracy, South Beach sexual mores, and the web of human existence. His 1957 novel One Thing on My Mind, for which you see the uncredited wraparound cover from Popular Library above, proves that in the thirteen years between the two books Kastle honed his craft and became a much more confident and ambitious author. However, the earlier book is good too. The seedlings of full blown talent in both conception and execution are very apparent."

"In the story, everyman Ed Simon loses his job, leaving him and his wife with only a few hundred dollars. Desperation, anger, and general unhappiness with how life is turning out send him off his axis. His recklessness leads to disaster after disaster but he can’t change course.
