Most recently, this happened in a column from The Telegraph by Celia Walden (she’s Mrs. Piers Morgan, for what–if anything–that is worth). The column’s title is No, BBC. Bare nails are not racist, and it has to do with Ms. Walden’s coverage of a recent BBC program on which some nitwit insisted that white ladies who get “natural” manicures are expressing “[the] kind of sameness and erasure of [the] culture and identity that is so important to black and brown communities.” NW’s underlying thesis appears to be that very loud nail colors, very long nails, additional 3-D excrescences, and other complicated details are almost exclusively the provenance and culture of people of color, and so by rejecting them and going for the shade she was born with, a white woman is rejecting other cultures and expressing her own cultural privilege and bias. It may be notable that NW provides no congratulatory words for this woman who’s rejected what used to be called “cultural appropriation.”"
