"Jacob Wick was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1985, studied trumpet at SUNY Purchase under Jon Faddis, and then took a Master of Fine Arts in social practice at the California College of the Arts. For years, his own playing leaned toward solo trumpet noise and improvisation built around air ducts, birds, and cement. He has lived in Mexico City since 2014. I’ll make you coffee while you still sleep is the second album his quartet has made for Ropeadope SUR, the label’s Latin American arm, cut again at Pedro y el Lobo in the capital, with Federico Sánchez on guitar, Alonso López Valdés on bass and Gibrán Andrade on drums."

"‘Every day I stand on the balcony and hope you walk by’ sets Wick’s voice atop a flurry of drum sequences, and he sings it in a prog rock style before a jazz one. The music is intense, darting in all directions. At the midway point, he turns to the trumpet, and we break and transcend; when the voice returns, I am reminded of the late Canadian poet and musician Ian Ferrier, edgy and almost protesting. ‘New Jersey Turnpike 3am cold coffee stale milk’ is a voiceless trumpet on calm waters, Sánchez taking much of the piece, and both the writing and the guitar work are exceptional. ‘Fate should have made you a gentleman’s _____’ brings jazzy vibes and a trumpet lead with López Valdés in control throughout, and ‘Sentado en la barra con un nazi y Ramón’ is calmer again, guitar and trumpet exceptional once more. By ‘Ya’, the shortest thing here, the layers coming from all four men sit alongside the best contemporary European bands of late, and I am seriously warming to Wick’s trumpet and Sánchez’s guitar. The bass underfoot cannot be dismissed either."

"‘Paso y vamos caminando de la mano’ is the longest piece on the album and the one I would have felt needed words the least; the brief vocal is a sprinkling, not the cake."

"Three of the nine are not his, and the choices carry weight. ‘My Way’ is the Sinatra reading at heart, taken very slowly, not one for these ears — it plays as parody, though the last quarter lifts and the band go planet-hopping. Great music. ‘Un día nos vamos a morir’ belongs to Luisa Almaguer, the Mexico City songwriter who opened her 2024 album Weyes with it; here the guitar is band-standing again, waving its pick for all to see and hear, and Wick goes Spanish on the lyric at the halfway point. Nobody is doing anything like this. Closing with Cole Porter‘s ‘Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye’, abstract jazz patterns clash with improv and screeches, and only at the midpoint can we sense the song underneath."
